看到题目的你们,还没开始构思文书的你们,是不是有点方?

 

加州大学从2016年开始,就启用了新的申请文书题目,由之前沿用多年的2道题,变成了8道题中选择4道题,这无疑增加了文书的难度。今年,加州大学的文书又会有什么样的改变呢?且看下文:

 

2017-2018年的加州大学文书题目, 整体上没有什么变化,还是要求申请者从8道题中选择4道题作答,每题上限是350个英文单词。不同的是,6题和第8题,今年在措辞上有微调,但还是换汤不换药呀。

Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.

哪一门学科能给予你启发和鼓励?描述一下你如何在课内外继续发展你对这门学科的兴趣吧。

 

【飞渡点评】很多同学对于“如何影响了你”感到很困惑,今年的题目,给了清晰的方向性 -- inside and/or outside of the classroom 学校也可以借此了解学生的课内学习和课外规划。

Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you stand out as a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California?

除了已经在申请表中填写的信息,你觉得是什么让你作为一名有优势的竞争者,能从众多申请者中脱颖而出?

 

【飞渡点评】同样都是写“什么让你脱颖而出”,去年用了“set you apart”,今年换成了“stand out”,虽然在措辞上表达的都是相似的意思,不过今年的题目,误导性小一些,同学们会更多地思考自身的特长或者技能,而不是纠结于去年的“one thing,为了“独一无二”而削尖脑袋。

 

剩下的6道文书题目如下:

1.Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.

描述你的一次领导经历,其中体现了你对他人的积极影响,帮助解决了争端或者是随着时间的推移,对团队的努力做出了贡献。

 

Things to consider: A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or a taking lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about your accomplishments and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities?

 

Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?

 

写作要点:一个领导角色代表的不仅仅只是一个头衔。它可以指:担任他人的导师,负责特定的任务,或者领导组织一个事件或者项目。思考你的成就和你从这件经历中学到的东西。你的具体职责是什么?

你领导一个团队吗?你的经历如何改变了你领导别人的视角?你是否帮助解决了你学校,你社区的教堂或者一个组织的一次重要争执?你的领导角色并不一定要局限于你的在校活动。比如说,你帮助你的家庭摆脱困难或者照顾你的家庭?

 

2.Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.

每个人都有创意的一面,它能通过很多的方面表现出来:解决问题,原创思维,和在艺术上的创作等等。描述你会如何表达你的创造性。

 

Things to consider: What does creativity mean to you? Do you have a creative skill that is important to you? What have you been able to do with that skill? If you used creativity to solve a problem, what was your solution? What are the steps you took to solve the problem?

 

How does your creativity influence your decisions inside or outside the classroom? Does your creativity relate to your major or a future career?

 

写作要点:创造力对你来说意味着什么?你有一项对你来说很重要的创造技能吗?使用这项技能,你有能力做什么?如果你曾使用创造力去解决一个问题,那么你的解决方案是什么?你采取了哪些措施去解决那个问题?你的创造力如何影响你课堂内外的决定?你的创造力是否和你未来的专业或者职业相关?

 

3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?

你最突出的天赋或才能是什么?一直以来,你是如何培养并展示它的?

 

Things to consider: If there’s a talent or skill that you’re proud of, this is the time to share it. You don’t necessarily have to be recognized or have received awards for your talent (although if you did and you want to talk about, feel free to do so). Why is this talent or skill meaningful to you?

 

Does the talent come naturally or have you worked hard to develop this skill or talent? Does your talent or skill allow you opportunities in or outside the classroom? If so, what are they and how do they fit into your schedule?

 

写作要点:如果你对自己的某一才能或技能感到自豪,这篇文书就是很好的分享机会。对于你这一才能或技能,不一定要是已经得到外界认可的,或是得到奖项了的(当然,如果确实得到了认可或是奖项,你也可以提及这方面)。

为什么这一才能或技能对你有意义?它是你自然就拥有的,还是通过刻苦努力得到的?它是否在课堂内外给你带来了机遇?如果有过,那是一些什么样的机遇呢?这些机遇在你的规划中扮演什么样的角色?

 

4.Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.

描述你曾利用某次重大教育机遇或努力克服教育障碍的经历。

 

Things to consider: An educational opportunity can be anything that has added value to your educational experience and better prepared you for college. For example, participation in an honors or academic enrichment program, or enrollment in an academy thats geared toward an occupation or a major, or taking advanced courses that interest you — just to name a few.

 

If you choose to write about educational barriers you’ve faced, how did you overcome or strived to overcome them? What personal characteristics or skills did you call on to overcome this challenge? How did overcoming this barrier help shape who are you today?

 

写作要点:教育机遇可以是任何丰富你教育经历并为大学做准备的事物。例如,参加某个荣誉项目或学术扩展项目,参加和职业或专业相关的学术机构,或学习你感兴趣的高阶课程等等。如果你想写曾遇到的教育障碍,那就要提到你是怎样最终克服或是努力尝试克服这些障碍的。在克服的过程中,你曾用到了哪些个人特质或技能?克服障碍的这一经历是怎样塑造现在的你的?

 

5.Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?

描述你所遇到的最重大挑战。你是如何克服这一挑战?这个挑战又是如何影响了你的学业表现?

 

Things to consider: A challenge could be personal, or something you have faced in your community or school. Why was the challenge significant to you? This is a good opportunity to talk about any obstacles you’ve faced and what you’ve learned from the experience. Did you have support from someone else or did you handle it alone?

 

If you’re currently working your way through a challenge, what are you doing now, and does that affect different aspects of your life? For example, ask yourself, “How has my life changed at home, at my school, with my friends, or with my family?”

 

写作要点: 挑战既可以是个人生活中遇到的困难,也可以是在学校或某一团体生活中碰到的难题。为什么这一挑战对你如此重要?你可以借此机会,谈谈你所遇到过的困难,以及你从困难中学到了什么。面对困难时,你是独自承担,还是得到了他人的帮助?

如果你目前正面临某一挑战,你是如何应对这一挑战的?这一挑战对你的生活方方面面产生怎样的影响?例如,问问自己:我的家庭生活、学校生活由此产生了哪些变化?我与家人、朋友的关系又有了哪些改变?

 

6.Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you.

谈谈你最喜欢的学科,并解释它如何影响了你。

 

Things to consider: Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had inside and outside the classroom — such as volunteer work, summer programs, participation in student organizations and/or activities — and what you have gained from your involvement.

 

Has your interest in the subject influenced you in choosing a major and/or career? Have you been able to pursue coursework at a higher level in this subject (honors, AP, IB, college or university work)?

 

写作要点: 什么使你对这门学科产生兴趣?你是否曾有过相关经历?课堂或课外的经历皆可,比如志愿者活动、夏校项目、社团活动等。再者,从这些经历中,你收获了什么?

你的兴趣会不会影响对专业的选择?在这门学科的学习中,你是否能参与到更高水平的课程中?比如荣誉课程、APIB、大学课程等?

 

7.What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?

你对你的学校或者你所在的群体做出了什么贡献,让它变得更好了?

 

Things to consider: Think of community as a term that can encompass a group, team or a place – like your high school, hometown, or home. You can define community as you see fit, just make sure you talk about your role in that community. Was there a problem that you wanted to fix in your community?

 

Why were you inspired to act? What did you learn from your effort? How did your actions benefit others, the wider community or both? Did you work alone or with others to initiate change in your community?

 

写作要点:“community(群体)”一词,可以包括一个小组,队伍或者一个地方— 比如你的高中,家乡或者你自己的家。“community”一词可以根据需要由你定义,重点是要描述你在里面的角色。是发现了一个想要解决的问题吗?

是什么让你采取行动的?你从你的努力和行动中学到了什么?你所做的,如何让他人和/ 你所在群体 获益的?你是个人行动,还是团体合作的?

 

8.What is the one thing that you think sets you apart from other candidates applying to the University of California?

Things to consider: Don’t be afraid to brag a little. Even if you don’t think you’re unique, you are — remember, there’s only one of you in the world. From your point of view, what do you feel makes you belong on one of UC’s campuses? When looking at your life, what does a stranger need to understand in order to know you?

 

What have you not shared with us that will highlight a skill, talent, challenge, or opportunity that you think will help us know you better? We’re not necessarily looking for what makes you unique compared to others, but what makes you, YOU.

 

写作要点:不要觉得不好意思夸自己哦!记住,你是这个世界上独一无二的,尽管你也许觉得自己并不独特。以你的观点,你认为是什么让你适合我们的学校?当筛选审视自己经历的时候,你觉得对于那些不认识你的人,需要知道你的什么,才能了解你?

你有什么技能、天赋、遇到的挑战或机遇,是至今为止没有告诉我们的,但却能让我们更好了解你的?其实这道题,并不是要你解释是什么让你区别于其他学生而成为独一无二,而是问你,是什么让你成为现在的你!自!己!(就是不需要对比自己和他人哦!从自己身上发觉亮点就好~
