不用太文艺范丨UC系统文书题目解析&写作指南

加州大学系统(UC)是美国最具影响力的公立大学系统,这个体系下一共有10所大学,其中有9所学校招收本科生,分别为:

 

  • 加州大学-伯克利(UC Berkeley)

  • 加州大学-洛杉矶(UCLA)

  • 加州大学-圣塔芭芭拉(UCSB)

  • 加州大学-欧文(UC Irvine)

  • 加州大学-圣地亚(UCSD)

  • 加州大学-戴维斯(UC Davis)

  • 加州大学-圣克鲁兹(UC SC)

  • 加州大学-河滨(UC Riverside)

  • 加州大学-默塞德(UC Merced)

说到大学申请,除了GPA、语言成绩等“硬条件”,招生官还会通过申请文书来了解学生的个人背景和能力。2021年UC系统文书题目依然采用“8选4”的方式。

 

我们先来看一下UC文书的基本知识:

  1. 在给出的8道文书题目中选择4题回答

  2. 每篇文书字数要求250-350个英文单词

  3. 题目任选4道,但务必贴近生活。题目看似在问你的成就,实则关注的是你的成长:你是什么样的人,你有怎样的成长背景,你有过哪些经历,你的世界观,你的兴趣爱好?也就是说,Personal Insights (个人见解)终究要反映个人特质。

 

温馨提示:个人陈述肯定很“个人”,关键是呈现出“你是谁”,“你在意啥”,和“你想UC知道啥”。

 

相比CA主文书和各类补充文书,UC文书留给学生的创作空间并不充裕,在篇幅限制内,要做到语句清晰、结构完整,侧重叙述(tell)大于展示(show),同时结合以个人为重心的反思。写UC文书的时候,同学们不要追求“文艺范”天花乱坠~

 

 

 

01

Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time.  

 

描述你的一次领导经历。在这次经历中,随着时间的推移,你对他人产生了积极影响,帮助解决了争端或对团队做出了贡献。

 

 

Things to consider: A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or a taking lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about your accomplishments and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities? 

 

 

Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities.  For example, do you help out or take care of your family?

 

 

写作要点:一个领导角色代表的不仅仅只是一个头衔。它可以指:担任他人的导师,负责特定的任务,或者领导组织一个事件或者项目。思考你的成就和你从这件经历中学到的东西。你的具体职责是什么?

 

你领导一个团队吗?你的经历如何改变了你领导别人的视角?你是否帮助解决了你学校,你社区的教堂或者一个组织的一次重要争执?你的领导角色并不一定要局限于你的在校活动。比如说,你帮助你的家庭摆脱困难或者照顾你的家庭?

 

 

飛渡君:这一题是关于领导力的,题目的重点是想要了解你与他人分工合作、共同改善身边环境的能力,而不仅仅是一个带着Leader头衔的经历。CA系统和其他学校也有类似的文书题目:

Discuss an accomplishment, event or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

讨论一个小成就,事件或者某种领悟,标志着你的一段个人成长,或者对于自我认知的突破。

 

 

🔺麻省理工学院(MIT)

At MIT, we bring people together to better the lives of others. MIT students work to improve their communities in different ways, from tackling the world’s biggest challenges to being a good friend. Describe one way in which you have contributed to your community, whether in your family, the classroom, your neighborhood, etc. (200-250 words)

在麻省理工学院,我们将人们团结在一起,以改善他人的生活。麻省理工学院的学生致力于以不同方式改善社区,从应对世界上最大的挑战到成为好朋友。描述您为社区做出贡献的一种方式,无论是在家庭,教室,邻里等等。

 

 

类似的题目当然不止以上列举的这些,任何与社区和活动相关的或者对他人作出贡献的经历都可以成为这类道题的素材来源。

Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.   

 

每个人都有具备创造性的一面,它能通过很多的方面表现出来:解决问题,创新思维,艺术创作等等。描述一下你是如何表达你的创造力的。

 

 

Things to consider:  What does creativity mean to you? Do you have a creative skill that is important to you? What have you been able to do with that skill? If you used creativity to solve a problem, what was your solution? What are the steps you took to solve the problem?

 

 

How does your creativity influence your decisions inside or outside the classroom? Does your creativity relate to your major or a future career?

 

 

写作要点:创造力对你来说意味着什么?你有一项对你来说很重要的创造技能吗?使用这项技能,你有能力做什么?如果你曾使用创造力去解决一个问题,那么你的解决方案是什么?你采取了哪些措施去解决那个问题?你的创造力如何影响你课堂内外的决定?你的创造力是否和你未来的专业或者职业相关?

What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?  

 

你最突出的才能或技能是什么?一直以来,你是如何培养并展示这一才能或技能的?

 

 

Things to consider: If there’s a talent or skill that you’re proud of, this is the time to share it. You don’t necessarily have to be recognized or have received awards for your talent (although if you did and you want to talk about, feel free to do so). Why is this talent or skill meaningful to you?

 

Does the talent come naturally or have you worked hard to develop this skill or talent? Does your talent or skill allow you opportunities in or outside the classroom? If so, what are they and how do they fit into your schedule?

 

写作要点:如果你对自己的某一才能或技能感到自豪,这篇文书就是很好的分享机会。对于你这一才能或技能,不一定要是已经得到外界认可的,或是得到奖项了的(当然,如果确实得到了认可或是奖项,你也可以提及这方面)。

 

 

为什么这一才能或技能对你有意义?它是你自然就拥有的,还是通过刻苦努力得到的?它是否在课堂内外给你带来了机遇?如果有过,那是一些什么样的机遇呢?这些机遇在你的规划中扮演什么样的角色?

Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.  

 

描述你曾如何利用某次重要的教育机遇,或如何努力克服你所面临的教育障碍。

 

 

Things to consider: An educational opportunity can be anything that has added value to your educational experience and better prepared you for college. For example, participation in an honors or academic enrichment program, or enrollment in an academy that’s geared toward an occupation or a major, or taking advanced courses that interest you — just to name a few. 

 

If you choose to write about educational barriers you’ve faced, how did you overcome or strived to overcome them? What personal characteristics or skills did you call on to overcome this challenge? How did overcoming this barrier help shape who are you today?

 

写作要点:教育机遇可以是任何丰富你教育经历并为大学做准备的事物。例如,参加某个荣誉项目或学术扩展项目,参加和职业或专业相关的学术项目,或学习你感兴趣的高阶课程等等。如果你想写曾遇到的教育障碍,那就要提到你是怎样最终克服或是努力尝试克服这些障碍的。在克服的过程中,你曾用到了哪些个人特质或技能?克服障碍的这一经历是怎样塑造现在的你的?

Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement? 

 

描述你所遇到的最重大挑战。你是如何克服这一挑战?这个挑战又是如何影响了你的学业表现?

 

 

Things to consider: A challenge could be personal, or something you have faced in your community or school. Why was the challenge significant to you? This is a good opportunity to talk about any obstacles you’ve faced and what you’ve learned from the experience. Did you have support from someone else or did you handle it alone?

 

 

If you’re currently working your way through a challenge, what are you doing now, and does that affect different aspects of your life? For example, ask yourself, “How has my life changed at home, at my school, with my friends, or with my family?”

 

 

写作要点: 挑战既可以是个人生活中遇到的困难,也可以是在学校或某一团体生活中碰到的难题。为什么这一挑战对你如此重要?你可以借此机会,谈谈你所遇到过的困难,以及你从困难中学到了什么。面对困难时,你是独自承担,还是得到了他人的帮助?

 

 

如果你目前正面临某一挑战,你是如何应对这一挑战的?这一挑战对你的生活方方面面产生怎样的影响?例如,问问自己:我的家庭生活、学校生活由此产生了哪些变化?我与家人、朋友的关系又有了哪些改变?

 

 

飛渡君:挑战”这类话题的文书深受名校偏爱,这样的文书题目也强调了学校对克服困难的品质的重视。有时候,参考多个相似的补充文书问题也是打开文书写作思路的方式之一。如果恰巧,你申请的学校没有这类补充文书题目,那也不要感到无力哦~还有以下这个文书题目可以参考!

 

🔺CA主文书,第2题

The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

我们从遇到的困境/阻碍获得的经验教训是我们之后成功的基础。回忆你曾经面对过的一次挑战、一场挫折或者一种失败,它是如何影响你的?你又从中学到了什么?

 

 

需要注意的是,尽管UC第5题最后有问到“学术成就”,但这并不代表你在写作的时候必须选择学术上的挑战。如果你的挑战影响了你的价值观,你的价值观又影响了你的学术态度,这样的“个人见解”会有更深刻的意义。

Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom. 

 

哪一门学科能给予你启发和鼓励?描述一下你如何在课内外继续发展你对这门学科的兴趣吧。

 

 

Things to consider: Many students have a passion for one specific academic subject area, something that they just can’t get enough of. If that applies to you, what have you done to further that interest? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had inside and outside the classroom — such as volunteer work, internships, employment, summer programs, participation in student organizations and/or clubs — and what you have gained from your involvement.

 

 

Has your interest in the subject influenced you in choosing a major and/or future career? Have you been able to pursue coursework at a higher level in this subject (honors, AP, IB, college or university work)? Are you inspired to pursue this subject further at UC, and how might you do that?

 

 

写作要点: 很多学生都有自己喜欢的科目,并且沉迷不已。如果你也是这样,那你是如何发展这项兴趣的呢?谈谈是什么使你对这门学科产生兴趣?你是否曾有过课内外的相关经历?比如志愿者活动、实习、工作、暑期项目、社团活动等。从这些经历中,你收获了什么?

 

 

你的兴趣是否影响了你对专业和未来职业的选择?在这门学科的学习中,你是否能参与到更高水平的课程中(比如荣誉课程、AP、IB、大学课程等)?你是否希望在UC继续学习这门学科?你有什么计划?

 

 

飛渡君:这是一道显而易见的Why Major题目,与UWM(威斯康辛大学-麦迪逊)的补充文书有相似之处,“素材再利用”这一招可以用起来。

Tell us why you would like to attend the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In addition, please include why you are interested in studying the major(s) you have selected. If you selected undecided, please describe your areas of possible academic interest.

告诉我们你为什么想要进入威斯康辛大学-麦迪逊。此外,请列出你对所选专业感兴趣的原因。如果你尚未决定,请描述你可能感兴趣的学术领域。

 

 

如果你同时也在申请英国的学校,那么英国申请文书也是很好的素材选择。需要注意的是“学术科目”这个关键词,意味着需要结合课内和课外的专业探索来讲述,而不是全篇描述一系列相关的课外活动。

What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?  

 

你做了什么贡献让你的学校或者你所在的群体变得更好了?

 

 

Things to consider: Think of community as a term that can encompass a group, team or a place – like your high school, hometown, or home. You can define community as you see fit, just make sure you talk about your role in that community. Was there a problem that you wanted to fix in your community?

 

 

Why were you inspired to act?  What did you learn from your effort? How did your actions benefit others, the wider community or both? Did you work alone or with others to initiate change in your community?

 

 

写作要点:“community(群体)”一词,可以包括一个小组,队伍或者一个地方—— 比如你的高中,家乡或者你自己的家。“community”一词可以根据需要由你定义,重点是要描述你在里面的角色。是发现了一个想要解决的问题吗?

 

 

是什么让你采取行动的?你从你的努力和行动中学到了什么?你所做的,如何让他人和/或 你所在群体 获益的?你是个人行动,还是团体合作的?

 

 

飛渡君:除将题目限定在了学校和群体之外,这道题实际上与第一题的考点是十分相似的。与此类似的文书题目还有很多了,CA主文书的第4题、MIT的补充文书等都可以作为参考。

Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

描述一个你已经解决的问题或你想解决的问题。它可以是智力上的挑战,研究领域的质疑,或道德方面的困境。无论问题大小,对你个人是重要的都可以。解释这个问题对你的重要性,以及你解决这个问题所采取的步骤和方法。

 

 

需要注意的是,UC这道题里问及的是你“已经做过”的事情,而其他学校的文书很多是允许学生讨论将来想要解决的问题,因此,在这一点上要注意分辨。

Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you stand out as a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California?

 

除了已经在申请表中填写的信息,你认为是什么让你作为一名能从众多申请者中脱颖而出的有优势的竞争者?

 

 

Things to consider:  If there’s anything you want us to know about you, but didn’t find a question or place in the application to tell us, now’s your chance. What have you not shared with us that will highlight a skill, talent, challenge or opportunity that you think will help us know you better?

From your point of view, what do you feel makes you an excellent choice for UC? Don’t be afraid to brag a little.

 

 

写作要点:如果你有任何关于你的事情希望分享给我们,但是一直在申请表中找不到合适的地方填写,现在就是你的机会了。在没有分享给我们的事情中,你觉得有哪一个技能、天赋、迎接过的挑战,或者是得到过的机会,能够让我们更好地了解你?

写作建议

  • 在选择文书题目的时候,可以选择与自己经历比较贴切的问题来写,这样写出来的文书会更加真实,更有说服力~

     

  • 撰写申请文书时,可以充分发散思维再对症下药,结合自己的选校,看看哪些文书素材可以“再利用”、灵活地运用到不同学校的申请文书中,实现事半功倍~
